This upcoming film will be the fourth in the beloved comedy franchise and the first in over two decades, following Friday After Next in 2002.
Richard Brener, President and CCO of New Line, confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Ice Cube had reached an agreement to develop Last Friday. Variety has also verified this announcement.
Ice Cube has previously expressed his intentions to make another Friday movie, but this deal marks a major milestone for the project. In June 2024, the rapper and actor revealed that there was growing interest at the studio for Last Friday, with support from co-chief Michael De Luca. He shared this during an appearance on Flavor of the Week, a SiriusXM show hosted by Flavor Flav. De Luca and Pamela Abdy took over New Line’s film division in 2022.
“They’ve got new leadership: my guy Mike De Luca, who was at New Line when I first started — when I did the first Friday, Players Club, and All About the Benjamins. Mike De Luca was there,” Ice Cube explained.
Ice Cube has starred in all three previous Friday films: Friday (1995), Next Friday (2000), and Friday After Next (2002). He co-wrote the original movie with DJ Pooh and had solo screenplay credits for the sequels. All three films were produced by New Line, which was led by De Luca during the creation of the original trilogy. Warner Bros. later acquired New Line, bringing the Friday franchise under its control.
