Carnival is in full swing in T&T and the fetes are heating up. This past Friday night, BLOCKO was held in East Trinidad at the Centre of Excellence. Alison Hinds and Nessa Preppy were among the artistes who represented at the event. Together, they brought the feminine energy many anticipate annually, to the season.
The male dominated soca arena can be a tough one to break into. Over the years, women have had to work twice as hard, they’ve admitted, to be heard and seen on stages in the festival. On Friday night, Alison and Nessa were the only two female acts booked to perform. The other artistes who made up the cast were Iwer George, Preedy, Motto, Rome, Sekon Sta and Young Bredda and with that, the ladies made a point of executing.
Hinds, dressed in a skin fitting, purple coloured outfit, walked on stage, ready to own it beside Preppy who’d been introduced first. Together, they delivered their collaboration for the season – ‘Who Ready.’ They did not disappoint! Vocals on point, Hinds belted out those notes with a level of venom that said,“I’m back to mash up fete this year.” Nessa, definitely growing in the area of performance, pushed hard and with Hinds encouraging her on, she stood up to the challenge. “Nessa yuh cyah hide yuh know. But wait, it cyah just be me wining! De little girl from Arima have to wine too,” said Hinds into the microphone as patrons looked on excitedly. The pair made for a pretty good duo on stage, and when their collab delivery was over, Hinds proceeded to take fans down memory lane with her anthems, ‘Love and Unity’ and ‘Faluma.’
BLOCKO ushered in the weekend last weekend and by the sights, sounds and vibes experienced, the cooler event was well enjoyed by those who attended.
