Known simply as Leighanna, the South Trinidad native is more than just a pretty face—she’s a rising force in the industry with a fresh single, “Flowers,” that promises to shake up the season ahead.
“I’ve been singing since I was three. I’ve always known this was the path for me—it’s what I do,” Leighanna shares. Raised with the encouragement of her father, a former singer, she began her musical journey by writing songs before being drawn to the stage. “I was a teenager when I released my first track, ‘Ah Feelin’ It.’ At the time, female artists like Lil Bitts and Patrice Roberts were also making waves in the industry,” she recalls. “It was a tricky time for me—I didn’t know anyone in the business, had never entered Soca or Calypso competitions, but I went around to radio stations with my song, and the response was positive.”
Leighanna went on to release several singles, collaborating with artists like D Angel Journey and Terry Seales. “Back then, I struggled with stage fright, but the music was well-received,” she says. Despite her early success, circumstances forced her to take a break from music to focus on personal matters. During this time, coinciding with the pandemic, she reassessed her career, developed a new strategy, and worked on a plan for a stronger comeback.
In November 2023, ahead of Carnival 2024, she released the hit single “Bam Bam Good,” which was embraced by DJs across major radio stations in Trinidad and Tobago. “I have an amazing team now—my manager Zoe, my assistant Jalyan, and international support from Chris. It’s an exciting time,” she says, reflecting on her recent success. As Carnival 2025 approaches, she is more determined than ever to make her mark on the music scene.
Her latest single, “Flowers,” written by Kambon and produced by Shot Master J and Body Roc, is already making waves. “This song is not just for me; it’s for my daughter, who is three years old and already showing an interest in singing. Her bravery inspires me every day,” Leighanna explains. “I’m doing this for her as much as I am for myself.”
Leighanna finds great inspiration in some of the most powerful women in Soca, including Patrice Roberts, Destra Garcia, Terri Lyons, and her sister, Fay-Ann Lyons. “I admire Fay-Ann’s strong presence in the industry,” she says. “I’m so happy for Patrice too—she’s always reminded me to never give up.” Leighanna also shares a close friendship with rising star Jadel. “We clicked right away,” she adds.
Leighanna has also worked with Kyle Phillips on “Flowers” and is thrilled with the result. “I love working with Kyle; he’s exceptional at what he does,” she says. The track has already captured the attention of Soca fans, with the accompanying music video featuring a cameo by popular radio personality SupaHype.
“‘Flowers’ is a powerful message to men,” Leighanna says. “It’s a reminder that women—mothers, daughters, aunts, grandmothers—are the nurturers of life. We deserve to be respected, loved, and appreciated. This song is for all the women who make the world go round.”
