Machel Montano and Iwer George are two of this country’s latest creatives to have been recognized on Republic Day. Montano received the HummingBird Gold National Award and George, the Hummingbird Medal Silver, on Saturday at the Republic Day gala.
Machel, in acknowledging the honor, posted to social media, telling fans of his his gratitude for the award. He highlighted the support of his family, his parents, brother Marcus, children and wife. He dedicated the award to them.
Iwer also took to social media on Monday, saying, “Reflecting on my 30 plus years of experience within the entertainment, Calypso and Soca industry I am humbled and honored to be recognized by my country for the contributions that I have made.” George added, “To be bestowed an award of this magnitude makes doing this and going through all the struggles and hardships, worthwhile.
He said the experience has shown him that when you put in the work the rewards will be reaped. “The Love I have for the culture together with persistence and perseverance, is what has made me prevail,” said the artist.
