Rihanna Speaks Out on Election Day: “Vote Cause I Can’t”

It's Election Day in the U.S., and while Rihanna can't cast her own ballot, the Barbados-born singer and entrepreneur is certainly making her voice heard.

On Monday, the mother of two shared a bold post on social media, urging her fans to get out and vote for the Democratic nominee. In a playful video, Rihanna humorously captioned a clip with the words, “POV me trying to sneak into the polls with my son’s passport #votecauseicant.” Below the video, she added a pointed message: “When protecting p* and firing p* can happen all in one vote. #votecauseicant #TanSuitSeason.” The latter hashtag refers to a memorable moment from the Democratic National Convention, where the Democratic nominee rocked a tan suit, sparking conversations about fashion and style.

While Rihanna has called the United States home since 2005, she has not changed her citizenship and remains a proud Barbadian. Her inability to vote in the U.S. presidential elections has sparked debate and some fierce reactions from followers on her Instagram.

One follower posted, “Wanting to secure the border is akin to shutting the door to your home. It’s not even a locked door, it’s simply shut. All you gotta do is open it & walk in.” They continued, “There’s a right and wrong way to come inside. The people who are against a secure border are essentially saying it’s okay to break a window and enter that way. I’m sorry this is such a foreign concept for so many, but it stems from a lack of education. America is the land of the free, and that’s still true. ‘Enter ye your huddled masses’ is proof the invitation still stands.” The comment concluded with a suggestion that celebrities, like Rihanna, should avoid sharing political views, saying, “How’re you gonna misguide your fans? Stick to music, sis.”

Rihanna, never one to back down, clapped back: “Where were you on Jan 6, sis? Stick to your discounted crotch. We out here fighting for its rights!”

As the debate continued, Rihanna didn’t hold back, responding fiercely to more critical comments. When one commenter called her out for potentially encouraging illegal voting, Rihanna shot back, “Shut up, Karen,” under a post that read, “Illegal voting is a crime. Maybe she should be arrested for trying.” Another comment regarding illegal immigration, deportations, and abortions prompted Rihanna to respond with, “You’re f*cked! And so is the America you dream of. Hope you don’t have to find out the hard way.”

Despite her strong political opinions, Rihanna is unable to vote in U.S. elections due to her Barbadian citizenship. Her two sons, RZA and Riot, along with their father A$AP Rocky, are U.S. citizens, which only adds to the irony of her situation. While she may not have a vote, her influence and outspoken support for her political views continue to stir up conversation.
