On Sunday night, as the world watched on, Will Smith walked on stage to defend his wife’s honor, slapping Chris Rock and later telling Rock, while seated back in the audience, “keep my wife’s f*€ing name out of your mouth.”
Rock had made reference to Jada Smith’s shaved head when he made a GI Jane joke during his stage side humor.
Back in 2016, in their absence, Rock had made reference to Will and Jada in his opening monologue. The two had joined other African American celebs in boycotting the Oscars over the issue of inclusion. At that show, Rock insinuated that Jada hadn’t even been invited and said Smith had been overpaid for Wild Wild West film.
Smith later won the Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role for King Richard. On stage, he apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees.
