In the aftermath of Tobago’s Carnival, fans of Soca are calling for DJs and promoters to do better, this as a viral clip shows one passionate attendee and reporter, questioning the need for other genres of music to be played during carnival celebrations.
The clip shared by Tempo Networks’ host, JLova, hears her question who are the true gatekeepers of Soca music, this as the sound of dancehall can be heard blaring in the background. According to some commenters, the moment captured was in the aftermath of the actual carnival festivities. Some relayed that business partnerships with a Jamaican beverage brand led to the DJs music selection at that particular time. Others online who attended the Tobago Carnival however said throughout the festivities, even at fetes on the island, other genres of music was played.
This year, Tobago Carnival was hosted for the 4th year. The Tobago Festivals Commission in a statement in the aftermath of the festival, thanked sponsors saying, “From the fetes to the streets, your contributions helped us bring the spirit of Tobago to life, vibrant, creative and full of vibes.”
The hot button topic of safeguarding Trinidad and Tobago’s cultural expressions, particularly during Carnival celebrations, remains one debated online as comments across the internet have proven.
